PLANS for a new museum at St George’s chapel, Biggin Hill were formally approved by Bromley council last week.
Proposals drawn up the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum Trust were backed by the council’s executive on Wednesday, though a petition against the planned scheme, which calls for the demolition of the existing vestry, has attracted more than 8,000 signatures.
The £5m project has already attracted Heritage Lottery funding of £2m, as well a £1.5m endowment fund to support the future management of the museum.
Council leader Stephen Carr said: “It has been enormously important that not only is a museum finally built but also that the chapel remains as a place of worship alongside a confidence of the museum’s future because of the endowment fund and business plan in place.”
The museum is planned to open in November 2018, 100 years after the end of World War I.
